ENMAX is alerting the public to another threat being perpetrated on unsuspecting customers.
In January, ENMAX issued a
news release that warned of telephone fraudsters posing as legitimate ENMAX representatives. In the calls, scammers told customers their ENMAX account was in arrears and that they required payment to prevent an immediate disconnection of power. They then directed customers to make their payment through a pre-paid credit card available at many retailers. Unfortunately we have reports these fraudsters continue to target our customers but with a new and bothersome twist.
If fraudsters call customers and reach their voicemail, they leave instructions to call a special toll-free phone number where the fraudsters have copied a recording of ENMAX's opening message from its Customer Care Centre phone line complete with ENMAX's prompt options to mislead customers to think they are calling ENMAX. Should the customer continue with the call, they will connect with the scammer.
ENMAX encourages any customer who thinks they may have received a phone scam message to disregard and not engage with fraudsters, but to report this to local law enforcement. Further, customers requiring validation of their account balance or status are encouraged to log into their ENMAX account online at
www.enmax.com/sign-in, or to call 310-3010 toll free in Alberta.
