ENMAX launches Community Solar Fund to benefit Calgary communities

/ Calgary

ENMAX and The City of Calgary are pleased to announce the launch of the ENMAX Community Solar Fund. The fund, to be administered by The City of Calgary, will benefit local neighbourhoods through a $5-million in-kind, one-time contribution by ENMAX Energy to support solar energy installations at designated community halls throughout Calgary.

Through the ENMAX Community Solar Fund, ENMAX Energy will provide the solar equipment and hire tradespeople to install the equipment. The solar installations can yield a long-term benefit as the average lifetime is between 20 to 25 years. The City of Calgary will administer the program and identify the community halls that will receive the solar installations which will occur in phases and be completed by the end of 2022.

The City of Calgary and ENMAX Energy aim to have the first phase of local community solar installations completed by the end of 2021, and The City of Calgary will be announcing the selected halls for this first phase in the weeks ahead.

"This is a great project that will help community associations free up operating funds to serve our neighbourhoods and serve as an example to similar-sized facilities of the benefits of solar. A special thanks to Councillor Peter Demong, a true climate and community leader, for tirelessly championing this idea."

 – Mayor Naheed Nenshi.

"As a long-standing advocate for creating sustainable communities, I am proud of progressive initiatives like the ENMAX Community Solar Fund and will continue to encourage partnerships and investments that enable our renewable energy future. This fund will help us in our path towards net zero, while also bringing many benefits to Calgary's neighbourhoods at a time when our community centres need it the most."

Councillor Peter Demong.

"As we look ahead to Alberta's evolving energy landscape, ENMAX Energy is proud of our long-standing commitment to supporting the energy needs of our communities by facilitating access to renewable options like solar. Partnering with The City of Calgary and receiving valuable insights from Council members on how we can support the energy needs of our communities is well aligned with our shared commitment towards building a lower carbon energy future."

 – Lonnie Enns, President, ENMAX Energy.
