Calgary Energy Centre Maintenance Upgrade

Project Overview

The Calgary Energy Centre (CEC) is a 330 megawatt (MW) natural gas-fueled combined-cycle power generation facility in the northeast corner of the City of Calgary. Calgary Energy Centre No. 2 Inc. (CEC2), a subsidiary of ENMAX Energy Corporation, owns and operates this facility.

As part of the routine maintenance schedule for the CEC combustion turbine, turbine blades are removed and replaced with new or refurbished blades every 25,000 hours of operation to ensure the integrity of the components and ensure continued reliable operation. The next routine maintenance of the existing natural gas combustion turbine (GT) will replace the turbine blades with an updated design and be completed in Q2 2022 (the Project).

The new turbine blades incorporate improved cooling, durability, and aerodynamics, which is expected to increase the efficiency of the combustion turbines and increase power output of the centre. The current maximum capability of the CEC is 330 MW. As a result of the maintenance of these turbine blades and associated components, CEC2 expects a cumulative increase to the maximum capability of the CEC to approximately 360 MW.

All work will take place inside the existing CEC building and there are no impacts to noise or emissions. There are no building modifications anticipated as part of the Project.
