Understanding ENMAX Power Projects
As the wire services provider for the City of Calgary, ENMAX Power is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the system of wires and infrastructure that moves electricity to our City’s homes and businesses.
Two specific networks, one commitment to the communities we serve
Transmission system
Transmission projects can be initiated by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC), the Alberta Electricity System Operator (AESO), or an external customer. In keeping with AUC’s Rule 007 which governs how power companies engage with the public, extensive public consultation occurs before a project is approved.
Project focus
High-voltage cable and structures along the edge of a city or throughways such as highways. Projects include:
- Transmission line replacement/relocation
- Substation, transformer or switchgear Replacement
Engagement Process
Public Consultation:
- Door knocking on homes and businesses
- Open houses or information sessions
- Information packages to stakeholders (residents, occupants, landowners, community associations, interest groups, City councilor(s))
- Direct phone and email conversations
- Information posted on enmax.com
Distribution system
When the time comes to construct new distribution systems or upgrade/repair our distribution infrastructure, the public is notified as required of our upcoming utility construction work and any planned power outages. Notification of this work is focused on connecting with the local community residents, business owners or other stakeholders adjacent to the work that will be done.
Project focus
Lower voltage cables above and below ground, poles typically found on streets or laneways, transformer boxes and vaults. Projects include:
- Underground cable replacements
- Downtown underground network upgrades
- Overhead pole and cable replacements
Engagement Process
Public Notification:
- Written notice
- Phone calls and emails
- On-site visits with technical lead(s) and Customer Relations
- Information packages to stakeholders (community associations, interest groups, City councilor(s))
- Information posted on enmax.com
