What to expect?

Before you start

Step 1 - Gather documentation

In order to successfully submit a request to start a project, you will require the following:

Contact information for the project site, billing and on site contact.
Your upgraded or new electrical service details (Including electrical panel phase, amperage and voltage).
Your project site plan (This could be as simple as a marked up screenshot or as complex as a drafted drawing).
Your electrical single line diagram - This will be required for all commercial service and residential service grater than 200 amps.

Approval process

Step 2 - Submit request

Once you submit your Project Intake request, you will receive an email confirmation upon the successful submission of the request.

Step 3 - Initial consult

Once your submission is received, we will contact you to discuss your specific project details. Requests are responded to in priority sequence.

Step 4 - Review and approve

ENMAX Power and/or an electrical inspector may need to review your plan before you proceed. This must be completed before you can move forward with work. We will inform you if this must occur.

What is Distributed Energy Resource (DER)?

DER includes any distribution-connected resource that can potentially supply energy to the electrical system (grid). This includes but is not limited to, resources such as solar panels, combined heat and power generators (CHPs), electric vehicles (EVs) and home battery storage. ENMAX Power supports generation interconnection for customers within our service territory of Calgary and parts of MD Rockyview, MD Foothills and Tssut'ina Nation.

Many factors drive the ability and cost of connecting micro-generation, distributed generation, and other distributed energy resource projects to the ENMAX electric distribution system, including project location, type of generation, operating characteristics, the surrounding grid characteristics and project timing.

Types of generation

Distributed generation (DG)

Distributed generation is electrical production that may or may not come from renewable energy sources. These productions sources include backup generators,

There are three (3) operational types:

Emergency/ backup – Open transition and closed transition (100ms or less)
Parallel/ non-export – In parallel with utility but does not export
Export generation – In parallel with utility and exporting

Micro-generation (MG)

MG is electric production using an alternative energy source, sized to meet a part or all of a customers annual load requirement. Production within micro-generations cannot be larger than 5 MW.

Small scale generation (SSG)

SSG includes distribution connected electricity generation from renewable and alternative sources that can supply electric energy to the grid or within an isolated community.

Safety requirements

ENMAX personnel must be able to isolate themselves from the customer’s generator while doing any work on the revenue meter
The isolation device must have provisions to be locked in the open position
ENMAX does not recognize any type of Transfer Switch as a suitable means of disconnect
Updated SLDs must be placed in the main electrical rooms when there’s generation on site
Warning notices and signage shall clearly indicate that generation is present
Please refer to CEC Section 84 — Interconnection of electric power production sources for guidance
All new DG interconnections require a site inspection prior to ENMAX approval

Network System/Downtown Calgary information

Generation Export is not permitted within any of the Secondary Network Systems within The City of Calgary due to safety and technical reasons. Generation Export can only operate as Non-Export Non-Parallel or Non-Export Parallel:
