Through our participation in new projects as well as ongoing maintenance and upgrades, our Traction Power team can focus on constructability and maintainability. Our design and construction staff work collaboratively to find a solution that will meet the customer requirements.
Our comprehensive reliability program identifies system risks and recommends improvements, resulting in project designs that produce optimal reliability.
We design, construct and maintain the overhead contact system for Calgary’s LRT, consisting of auto-tensioned catenary with portions of trolley and rigid conductor rail. Our power line technicians built the OCS, conduct regular inspections and maintenance and respond to emergency calls as required, including assessing risks and working on the energized system where appropriate.
We can design, construct and maintain the traction power distribution system between the substations and the OCS. Our experience with greenfield duct banks and working in congested settings such as the downtown core allows us to install precast or cast-in-place duct bank, pull and rack cable, and terminate cable efficiently.

The West LRT represented the largest infrastructure project of its kind in Calgary’s history when it was completed in 2012.
Working as a Joint Venture Partner with SNC Lavalin, we provided the LRT Systems for the 8.2km extension.
The traction power portion of this line required nine traction power substations and over 16km of OCS. EPSC designed, procured, constructed and commissioned parts of the traction power and overhead contact system, allowing the successful completion of the project under a tight project schedule.
This project had several firsts for Calgary – first elevated guideway, first underground station, and first installation of overhead rigid conductor rail in a tunnel.
EPSC upgraded nine of the original substations over a three-year period. In order to maintain system reliability, the construction was sequenced so that adjacent substations were not out of service at the same time. A temporary, portable substation was used during the upgrade at one location to ensure reliable power to the adjacent LRT maintenance facility during the upgrade work.
EPSC was able to minimize system disruptions and complete the project ahead of schedule and within budget. This started with careful design. EPSC used 3D modelling to evaluate the layout and equipment conflicts for an existing station, which led to a more accurate set of issued-for-construction drawings and fewer changes during construction. The upgrade itself involved replacing all traction power equipment and completing communication system upgrades. EPSC provided the turnkey design, procurement, and construction solution.
Calgary’s New Central Library presented a unique challenge – to encapsulate the operating LRT so that the library building could be built around the existing LRT.
EPSC designed a feasible approach and relocated the traction power distribution, signals, communication and duct bank system to fit within the encapsulation. This provided a functional solution to Calgary Transit, and a significant cost reduction to the encapsulation itself.
Adding to the complexity of this one-of-a-kind project was the need to minimize revenue service disruptions. This required strategic coordination to ensure the majority of the work activities were bundled into one of the 23 brief, well-executed outages.
We have been designing and constructing the City of Calgary’s CTrain LRT system, since it launched in 1981. We began as the City of Calgary electric department.
Today we are a subsidiary of ENMAX. We continue to assist Calgary Transit with upgrade projects, maintain the system’s 52 substations, 118 kms of OCS, and provide routine and emergency maintenance 24/7 – ensuring that one of the busiest transit systems in North America reliably serves its riders in all weather conditions. Over the past five years, this has resulted in traction power system reliability of 99.986 per cent.
