Modernizing the grid: AMI is coming to ENMAX Power

ENMAX Power is moving into the next phase of bringing Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) to our customers.

AMI is an integrated metering technology that enables two-way remote communication between utilities and individual meters. It’s the next step in providing customers with more convenience, reliability and control over managing their electricity use, while ensuring ENMAX Power continues to provide safe, cost-effective and reliable service.

“This is an exciting project for ENMAX Power,” says Jana Mosley, President, ENMAX Power. “Deployment of AMI technology across our service area brings our metering system up to industry standard. It’ll help us serve our customers with increased reliability and efficiency while reducing operating costs over time.”

The AMI program allows ENMAX Power to create the grid of the future for Calgarians, while continuing to provide the best service possible to our customers. Customer benefits include the following:

  • Operational efficiencies: Increasing our ability to read meters remotely improves efficiencies.
  • Reduced outage durations: AMI meters will enable real-time outage notifications, which could mean shorter outages for our customers and better communication on restoration timelines.
  • Decreased transit to customer properties: There will be less in-person work required, which means less disruption.
  • Assistance detecting meter tampering and electricity theft: This results in a safer and more efficient electrical system.
  • Automated and consistent meter reading: AMI will provide increased accuracy of customers’ monthly electricity consumption, as customers will be billed based on actual usage every month, reducing the potential for estimated reads.

Last year ENMAX Power executed an AMI pilot project in parts of Saddle Ridge in Calgary’s northeast to test the AMI infrastructure and technology solution. This pilot was successful, and we have since received approval from the Alberta Utilities Commission for AMI deployment across ENMAX Power’s service area.

In July, we installed AMI technology in Calgary’s northeast communities of Saddle Ridge, Cornerstone, Skyview, Cityscape and Redstone. These communities were selected because the homes were built after 2018 and AMI meters are already installed. ENMAX Power crews installed routers that will enable two-way communication with the meters. The installation of this equipment is the first phase of AMI implementation and will provide additional insights, data and testing for AMI technology as we prepare for citywide deployment.

“AMI provides so much opportunity for ENMAX Power and our customers,” says David Lenz, Vice President of Field Services, ENMAX Power. “This technology will allow our team members to learn and use new technology, open up innovation and provide quicker meter readings—which all lead to improved customer service.”
