ENMAX Power updates interactive mapping tools for developers

ENMAX Power is updating two interactive online maps available to help commercial customers quickly shortlist potential locations for their next projects: our load capacity map and hosting capacity map. The load capacity map was updated late last year, and the hosting capacity map will be updated in the coming weeks.

“We want to empower our commercial customers to help them make informed decisions about their developments,” said Soroush Shafiee, customer planning engineer. “By providing tools like our load and hosting capacity maps, developers are able to find vital information from the comfort of their own homes and offices anytime they want.”

Our load capacity map estimates available load capacity for residential, commercial and industrial developers in Calgary. This information allows customers to identify potential interconnection areas which may require less significant modifications to ENMAX Power’s grid.

As new technologies develop and customer preferences change, ENMAX Power is seeing greater demand from developers and homebuilders to install solar and other forms of distributed energy as part of their building projects. The second visualization tool – our hosting capacity map – provides guidance on the hosting capacity available for solar photovoltaic (PV) and other distributed energy resources around the city.

The recent updates include the most up-to-date data for expected growth for electricity demand and generation capacity in ENMAX’s distribution system. It also includes recently completed system upgrades.

“Our system is always evolving – new load comes on, generators are connected, and configurations could be modified at any given point,” said Shafiee. “These updates will provide our customers with the most current information.”

The load capacity map is fed by data from forecasting and system assessment tools that ENMAX Power developed in-house. The data for the hosting capacity map is based on a module ENMAX Power added to its planning software. The module runs a series of iterative power flow simulations on the connected segments of ENMAX Power’s distribution feeder models, and the results are graphically displayed on the map.
