Natural gas is used in many places around your home. Try some of these gas-savings tips to see if you can reduce the amount you use.

  • Install a programmable thermostat and set it to optimize your heating and cooling efficiency throughout the day.
  • Wear a sweater or use a blanket instead of turning up the heat.
  • Get your ducts cleaned to ensure the efficiency of your HVAC system.
  • Insulate your hot water tank and pipes to help prevent heat loss.
  • Use your convection oven to reduce baking times.
  • Use a toaster oven for smaller baking needs instead of heating your large oven.
  • Turn the oven off a few minutes before cooking is complete – the heat in the oven will finish the job.
  • Don't open the oven door while it is in operation.
  • Use the cold water option on your washing machine.
  • Don't overuse your dryer – hang clothes to dry whenever possible.
  • Use an electronic moisture or temperature sensor that turns off your dryer when your clothes are dry.
  • Empty your dryer's lint trap after every load.
  • Use an outdoor clothesline to dry your clothes.
  • Check your furnace's filter every month and have your furnace and ducts cleaned once a year to increase efficiency.
  • In the winter, keep the blinds on your south-facing windows open during the day to let the sun heat your home.
  • Keep the fireplace damper closed unless you have a fire going. If you don't use your fireplace, seal your chimney flute.
  • Keep doors and windows shut during the winter to prevent heat escaping.
  • Caulk your windows and doors and replace old windows to prevent air leaks.
  • Turn your water heater off or set it to vacation mode when you're away.
  • Update appliances with more energy efficient models.
