Foothills Area Transmission Development South Calgary

Communities in SE Calgary

Project overview

To meet the growing power demands in south Calgary, the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) identified the need to add a new 138 kV transmission line between ENMAX No. 65 Substation (intersection of Highway 22X and 88 Street SE) and ENMAX No. 41 Substation (213 Shalom Way SW) via ENMAX No.54 Substation (3023 210 Avenue SE). The new line is to ensure ongoing reliability for the South Calgary area.

To meet this need, ENMAX Power Corporation (ENMAX Power) proposed two viable transmission routes – a preferred and an alternate to the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC). In January 2016, the AUC approved the preferred route after completing a public consultation process and hearing from various stakeholders.

The total length of the approved transmission line to be constructed is approximately 14 kilometres. New equipment will be added at ENMAX Substations No. 65 and No. 41 to accommodate these new transmission lines.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2016. The transmission line will be built starting at ENMAX No. 65 Substation and continuing west towards ENMAX substation No. 41 Substation. The transmission line from ENMAX No. 65 Substation to Deerfoot Trail is scheduled to be built before the end of 2016 and the remainder of the transmission line is scheduled to be complete in 2017.

Installation of transmission structures from ENMAX No. 65 Substation to Deerfoot Trail will be complete in November ahead of schedule. Crews will continue installing transmission structures north of Deerfoot Trail beginning in November. This work was originally scheduled to begin in January 2017.

Actual pole locations along the alignment may vary slightly due to constructability and environmental considerations.

Project status

The Alberta Utilities Commission approved ENMAX's Foothills Area Transmission Development (FATD) 138 kV Transmission application on January 12, 2016. Construction is scheduled to begin in September 2016.
