Transmission Reinforcement Project

Project Overview

On November 30, 2017, ENMAX filed an application with the Alberta Utility Commission (AUC) for a new 138 kV underground transmission line between ENMAX No. 2 Substation (3120 – 9 Street SE) and ENMAX No. 8 Substation (903 – 4 Avenue SW). On November 9, 2018, the AUC approved the Project. 

The Project provides reinforcement of the 138 kV transmission system in Calgary's downtown area, and consists of the following:

Transmission line

  • Construct a new 138 kV single circuit underground transmission line from ENMAX No. 2 Substation to ENMAX No. 8 Substation downtown.


  • ENMAX No. 2 Substation: Connect the new transmission line to the existing switchgear.
  • ENMAX No. 8 Substation: Modify the existing switchgear to connect the new transmission line. 

Project status

ENMAX filed an application with the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) for the proposed work on November 30, 2017. 

The AUC issued a decision approving the project on November 9, 2018 and construction is planned to begin in early 2019.
