Avoid a shock this long weekend – ENMAX shares spring project safety advice

Calgary, Alta. –  The May long weekend is around the corner, and that means many Calgarians will be tackling outdoor home improvement projects like landscaping, tree maintenance or building that new deck. But with that is the need to remember safety, especially when working near electrical lines or other ENMAX equipment.

“Whether you’re planting a tree or putting in a fence, it’s easy to forget what’s underground, or overhead,” says Dean Battershill, Manager, Safety at ENMAX. “We want to help people stay safe and avoid serious accidents or project setbacks while doing work around their homes.”

ENMAX is encouraging residents to take a few simple but important steps before starting any work:

  • Click before you dig: always contact Utility Safety Partners before digging to locate any underground utilities. This applies to any outdoor work – large or small. Visit utilitysafety.ca or call 1-800-242-3447.
  • Know your distance: maintain a safe distance from powerlines, this includes knowing where and what types of trees to plant near power lines. If you’re working within seven meters of overhead lines or one meter of an underground line, call ENMAX at 403-514-6100 for guidance and support. Power may need to be temporarily shut off to keep you safe while you work.
  • Tree trimming and maintenance: property owners are responsible for trimming trees that interfere with the service line that runs from the power pole to their home. ENMAX recommends hiring a trained arborist for this work.
  • Get the right permits: before starting any project that includes changes to existing electrical wiring homeowners must obtain a homeowner electrical permit from The City of Calgary.

ENMAX has safety experts available for interviews and will be sharing helpful safety tips on social media throughout the season.

“Electrical safety is everyone’s responsibility,” adds Battershill. “With a little planning, you can keep your project on track – and yourself out of harm’s way.”
