Powering TAZA: a groundbreaking Indigenous-led development
Just beyond Calgary’s southwest edge, a bold new community is taking shape on Tsuut’ina Nation land. Spanning more than 1,200 acres, Taza is one of the largest Indigenous-led development projects in North America—bringing together culture, commerce and community in three interconnected villages: Buffalo Run, Taza Park and The Crossing.
Calgary is experiencing an extraordinary period of growth, with nearly 100,000 people moving to Calgary last year alone. In 2025, industry is expecting to develop more than XX per cent more lots than last year, which was already a 15 year high.
ENMAX Power is proud to play a role in this once-in-a-generation project. As the electricity distribution provider for Tsuut’ina Nation and Taza, we’re delivering safe, reliable power to support the community’s long-term growth. Our work includes designing the electricity network, building infrastructure and working closely with builders, ensuring energy needs are met now and into the future.
But our connection goes beyond infrastructure. We take a collaborative approach when working on Indigenous lands—partnering with local leaders to honour cultural values, protect the environment and explore opportunities for employment, education and renewable energy initiatives.
When working on Indigenous lands, ENMAX takes a collaborative approach that respects the rights, knowledge and traditions of Indigenous communities. This includes:
- Protecting sacred or culturally significant trees: We work with community members to identify and preserve trees of historical or spiritual value wherever possible.
- Supporting traditional land stewardship: Indigenous perspectives shape our vegetation management strategies.
- Local employment and investment: We look for opportunities to support community-based hiring, training and business development.
From the first-ever Costco on First Nations land to more than 6,500 homes planned in Taza Park, this is a community where vision meets action. And we’re honoured to help power it forward.
This work is part of ENMAX’s broader effort supporting the continued success of Calgary and its surrounding areas, by investing in critical infrastructure, connecting a record number of new homes and strengthening the grid to meet today’s need and the needs of our customers in the future, accommodating rising demand and renewing aging infrastructure.
As we see more densification and increased electrification, ENMAX will continue to support growth and meet the evolving energy needs of our customers, playing a key role as our communities grows.
