ENMAX announces changes to Board of Directors, including new Chair

Barbara Munroe appointed Board Chair; Hon. Sonya Savage, K.C. joins as new Director

Calgary, Alta. –  ENMAX Corporation today announced changes to its Board of Directors. Barbara Munroe has been appointed Chair of the Board, succeeding Charles Ruigrok, who is stepping down from the role but will continue to serve as a Director. The Hon. Sonya Savage, K.C. has also joined the Board as a new Director.

"On behalf of ENMAX, I want to thank Charles for his many years of leadership and dedicated service as Board Chair, and for his continued commitment as a Director," said Mark Poweska, President & CEO. "His deep industry expertise and stewardship, including two periods serving as interim President & CEO, have been instrumental in guiding ENMAX through growth and transformation."

"We are also pleased to welcome Barbara as Board Chair and Sonya as our newest Director,” Poweska added. “Their combined experience in governance, law, energy policy, and public service will be a strong asset to the Board as we continue to deliver safe, reliable, and affordable energy for our customers."


About the new Board Chair

Barbara Munroe

 Barbara Munroe joined the ENMAX Board in 2021 and is the Chair of the Board. She previously served as Vice Chair of the Board, and as Chair of the Corporate Governance Committee. She also serves as a Director of Whitecap Resources Inc. and is actively involved in volunteer and non-profit organizations. Barbara is the former Board Chair of Veren Inc., a former Vice Chair of the Alberta Cancer Foundation’s Board of Trustees, and a former member of the Arthur J Child Comprehensive Cancer Center campaign task force which raised over $250 million, the largest capital fundraising campaign in Alberta’s health sector history.

Barbara has over 25 years of experience as a lawyer and executive in diverse industries. She held various senior executive positions at WestJet Airlines from 2011 to 2019, most recently as Executive Vice President, Corporate Services & General Counsel. Barbara also served as Assistant General Counsel, Upstream at Imperial Oil Ltd. from 2008 to 2011, and the Senior Vice President, General Counsel & Corporate Secretary for SMART Technologies Inc. from 2000 to 2008. Prior to her in-house roles, Barbara practiced corporate commercial law at Blake, Cassels & Graydon, LLP for ten years.

Barbara received a Lexpert Zenith Award for Women in Law, an award that recognized her work in the advancement of women in the legal profession. Barbara holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in finance and a Bachelor of Laws degree, both from the University of Calgary. Barbara is a Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Directors, Canada’s preeminent distinction for directors.


About the new Director

Sonya Savage, K.C.

Hon. Sonya Savage joined the ENMAX Board in 2026 and has over 30 years of legal, regulatory, political and electricity sector expertise. She also serves as Senior Counsel with Borden Ladner Gervais, and in other board and advisory roles including for Critical Minerals Americas Inc., E3 Lithium Ltd., Wilder Institute Calgary Zoo, and Reconciliation Energy Transition Inc.  

Sonya brings an extensive understanding of government relations and public policy advocacy to the Board. She previously served with the Government of Alberta as an MLA for Calgary-North West and is the former Minister of Environment and Protected Areas, Minister of Energy, and Minister of Justice and Solicitor General. As Minister of Energy, she was responsible for Alberta’s energy policy, electricity and utility frameworks, and regulatory oversight. Prior to elected office, Sonya practiced law before moving into the corporate sector, and held progressive roles including as Senior Director, Policy and Regulatory with Canadian Energy Pipeline Association and as Head of Federal Government Relations at Enbridge. 

Sonya holds Master of Laws (Environment & Energy), Bachelor of Laws, and Bachelor of Arts (Political Science) degrees from the University of Calgary and was appointed to the King’s Counsel in 2022.
