Reflections on the Indigenous Blanket Exercise

As part of our commitment to reconciliation and Indigenous relations, ENMAX continues to create opportunities for employees to deepen their understanding of Indigenous history and lived experiences. One of the most impactful is the KAIROS Blanket Exercise, an interactive learning experience designed to foster empathy, education and action.

In 2024, over 85 employees participated in four sessions, with more offered throughout 2025.

The exercise guides participants through over 500 years of history in under an hour. Blankets arranged on the floor represent the land, and participants step into the roles of Indigenous peoples. As the exercise progresses, blankets are removed or folded away—symbolizing land loss, the impacts of disease, broken treaties, residential schools and other realities of colonization.

“It’s one thing to read about this history, but another to feel it,” shared one participant. “Standing on the blankets as they disappeared beneath us brought home the scale of loss and trauma. And hearing the stories of lived experience made it deeply personal.”

Following the interactive portion, participants gather in a talking circle where stories from residential school and Sixties Scoop survivors are shared.

“The emotional impact of their stories stays with you,” another attendee reflected. “You realize this isn’t just history—it’s still happening in people’s lives today.”

The second part of the session invites participants to reflect on “what now?”—encouraging individual and collective steps toward reconciliation. Whether through conversations, continued learning or community involvement, the goal is to build greater awareness and foster meaningful change.

This exercise supports ENMAX’s broader Indigenous Relations framework, which includes education, internal knowledge sharing and building respectful relationships with Indigenous communities.
