ENMAX Energy and its subsidiaries owns and operates two wind farms, Taber Wind Farm and Kettles Hill Wind Farm, and have an interest in the McBride Lake Wind farm, delivering power to the grid from a great source of renewable energy, the wind!
Wind is one of the most environmentally responsible methods of producing electricity and is gaining popularity in Alberta and the rest of Canada. In fact, Alberta is a leader in Canada for wind energy production with the highest percentage of total installed wind generation capacity of any province.
Nestled along the Foothills near Pincher Creek, Alberta, the Kettles Hill Wind Farm is comprised of 35 Vestas turbines with a current capacity of 63 MW. ENMAX Energy, through a wholly-owned subsidiary, acquired the facility in June 2008. Kettles Hill is poised for growth, and has potential for a further 77 MW.
A joint venture between a subsidiary of ENMAX Energy Corporation and TransAlta Renewables Inc., McBride Lake Wind Farm is located just south of Fort MacLeod at McBride Lake, and is comprised of 114 Vestas turbines. The 73 MW facility is one of the largest wind farms in Canada producing enough electricity for about 32,500 homes.
In operation since 2007, the Taber Wind Farm is southeast of the town of Taber. 81 MW of power is produced by 37 Enercon turbines – among the most sophisticated turbines in the world. Each tower soars 85 metres above the ground, and the tallest point of the turbine (including the rotor blade) is equivalent to a 40 story building! The Taber Wind Farm is 100 per cent owned and operated by ENMAX Energy and all of the energy generated for the next 20 years is already purchased by the City of Calgary.
ENMAX Generation Portfolio Inc. (ENMAX) is proposing to construct up to a 200 MW wind farm southeast of Taber. The Zephyr Wind Farm development would be located southeast of the Town of Taber south of Hwy 513.
