What ending the Federal Carbon Tax means for your bill
As of April 1, 2025, the Government of Canada is removing the fuel charge from its carbon pollution pricing system. That means the Federal Carbon Tax will no longer apply to your natural gas usage on your ENMAX Energy bill.
Why the tax may still appear on your bill
While the Federal Carbon Tax won’t be charged on gas used from April 1 onward, it still applies to natural gas consumed through March 31. Since your bill reflects past usage, charges for natural gas used before April 1 will still appear on your bill in the following months.
Additionally, the tax may show up later due to billing adjustments, such as actual meter reads or recalculations from utility providers for natural gas usage before April 1. Once all past charges are paid, the tax will no longer appear on your bill.
Where to find it on your bill
The Federal Carbon Tax is listed under the delivery charges section of your natural gas bill. If the charge is $0, it will not be displayed.
How much you will save
The most recent Federal Carbon Tax rate was $4.095 per GJ. A typical Alberta household uses between 3 GJs per month in summer and 23 GJs per month in winter. For example, if you used 10 GJs, your Federal Carbon tax charge would have been $40.95 ($4.095 x 10 GJ). You will no longer be charged this tax for natural gas used after April 1.
What was the Federal Carbon Tax?
The Federal Carbon Tax, implemented from January 1, 2020, to March 31, 2025, was a charge on fuels that emit greenhouse gases, including natural gas. All energy providers, including ENMAX Energy, collected this tax on behalf of the Government of Canada.
What about the Canada Carbon Rebate?
The Federal Carbon Tax funded the Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR). With the tax ending, the Government of Canada is discontinuing the CCR for individuals. The final rebate payment will be issued by the federal government starting April 22, 2025.
