Solar install to save the Town of Westlock an estimated $600,000*

/ Westlock

The Town of Westlock has announced plans to outfit its Rotary Spirit Centre with a 625 kW solar array that will offset approximately 31 per cent of the electricity required to power the facility. The install will lead to cumulative savings of up to $600,000* over the next 25 years, based on 2018 consumption and rates.

"With the help of grant funding, we're able to offset a significant portion of our current energy consumption without having to take dollars away from another area. Solar is an investment in the town's future and from an environmental and financial perspective, it just makes sense," said Mayor Ralph Leriger.

When the project is completed in November 2019, the town will be offsetting 6,047 tonnes^ of C02 emissions, the equivalent of removing 85 cars from the road^.

"Our Council saw the long-term benefits of this project and demonstrated incredible leadership in this decision," said Interim Chief Administrative Officer, Simone Wiley. "This project is good for the Town of Westlock continuing to work towards our long-term approach to the sustainability of the community."

The project was facilitated by ENMAX and funded in part by the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC).

"From wanting greater control over their energy to reducing carbon emissions, dozens of municipalities in Alberta are choosing solar as an alternative source for their energy. ENMAX is here to help them by providing customized energy solutions," said Erwin Kantwerg, VP of Sales at ENMAX.
