Reminder: always follow safety procedures near underground electrical equipment

Builders are required to follow all safety procedures when working near underground electrical equipment – always remember to click before you dig. There are significant potential safety risks for individuals and quality risks for ENMAX’s infrastructure.

To prevent injuries and keep everyone safe, builders must practice continuous awareness around underground electrical equipment. The best way to avoid an incident is to prevent it by always working at a safe distance.

Excavators are to notify lineinspection@enmax.com of any excavation work within two metres of above-ground equipment (e.g., transformers) or one metre from any ENMAX buried facility (e.g., underground conduit).

If you must work closer, and have approvals and locates, be aware of the heightened danger. Safely expose buried facilities by using a dig by hand or hydrovac method within one metre of any underground equipment.

ENMAX has resources available to help raise awareness. Our Hazardous Electrical Awareness Tutorial (H.E.A.T) highlights electrical safety basics when working around underground power equipment. Please reach out to hotdigs@enmax.com to arrange for a H.E.A.T. presentation.
