Transformer supply chain update: ENMAX Power’s mitigation measures proving successful

ENMAX Power has been successfully avoiding a transformer stock-out situation–the point at which demand outpaces inventory and new supply–by implementing several measures to address global supply chain issues.

Our allocation strategy for Underground Residential Development (URD) ensures installations will be prioritized to locations where permanent energized services are required immediately. In addition, four new transformer suppliers have been added and large customers have been utilizing the Developer Choice loaner program.

“So far we’ve been very happy with results,” said Joe Beetge, Interim Director, Project Delivery. “A stock-out situation has been avoided–which was obviously our main concern–and our URD customers are receiving power prior to occupancy.”

“Our allocation strategy will remain in place until supply lines are verified,” said Beetge. “Purchases for 2023 and 2024 have been committed and we will revaluate the situation in late 2023.”

Supply chain issues have also led to long lead times for large transformers. ENMAX Power has implemented the following purchase options for customers looking for large transformers to help alleviate delays:

  • Purchase of ENMAX Power transformer–if the transformer size you require is in stock, we may be able to sell it to your design-build company.
  • ENMAX Power Transformer Loaner program - allows design-build companies to borrow a refurbished transformer on an interim basis until your ordered transformer is delivered.

Global supply chain challenges are occurring across the utility industry. A delay in lot development during the COVID-19 pandemic followed by a quick rebound and an unprecedented increase in development in late 2021/2022 led to transformer shortage. Due to the global challenges, transformer manufacturers have been unable to source critical materials and skilled labour.

“We will resume normal operating procedures as soon as possible,” said Beetge. “There are still challenges, but we are definitely seeing light at the end of the tunnel.”

Based on current information provided by developers and our suppliers, our modelling anticipates these challenges to be resolved by the end of 2023.
