ENMAX Corporation warns Albertans of a phone scam that may be targeting homeowners who were impacted by the recent floods. The caller pretends to have information about a homeowner's utility account and bills, and then advises that for a one-time fee of approximately $350 the customer can have an "energy guard" device attached to their home, effectively cutting their bills in half.
In the calls, originating from Texas, the individual claims to be from a Canadian company and is making this one-time offer as part of a government program to assist flood victims. The caller then informs the homeowner that more information will be sent to them once the payment is received.
"We're warning people about this scam and reassuring our customers that at no time have we or will we provide details on anyone's personal account information, except with their consent in accordance with privacy legislation," said Gianna Manes, President and CEO, ENMAX Corporation. "What is particularly bothersome about this scam is that the criminals are targeting people who likely have already experienced financial losses from the flood."
Albertans should be advised that the government program in question does not exist. ENMAX has contacted the Utilities Consumer Advocate (UCA) and RCMP to advise them of the situation. Anyone receiving a call is encouraged to report the occurrence to the UCA at
