In December 2022, the provincial government announced an extension of the Alberta Government Electricity Rebate Program until April 30, 2023.

Beginning with January invoices, eligible Alberta homes and businesses will automatically receive four consecutive monthly electricity rebates on their utility bills: a $75 credit on utility bills for January and February and a $25 credit on utility bills for March and April, to a total of $200 in rebates.

These rebates will be automatically credited to bills—exact timing within the month will vary depending on billing cycle. ENMAX Energy customers will see the rebate added to the Energy Charges area of your bill and labelled: GOA Utility Commodity Rebate.

If you are eligible for a rebate but don’t see it on your bill, it should appear on your next bill. Adjustments will be made to your account to ensure you are paid all rebates for which you are eligible, which may include receiving more than one rebate on a single bill or receiving a rebate for applicable usage after the program period ends.

Eligibility

Who is eligible

Consumers are automatically eligible for the electricity rebate if they:

• are currently connected to the system and receive a monthly electricity bill directly from a utility provider
• consumed less than 250 megawatt hours of electricity within the past year

​ Who is not eligible

Customers a​​re not eligible for an electricity rebate if they:

• do not receive a monthly bill directly from a utility provider
• this includes sub-metered residences where tenants pay a landlord or property owner for their energy usage (some condos and apartments); only the main site that connects directly to the distribution system is eligible to receive the rebate, if it consumes less than 250 megawatt hours per year
• provide yard or street lighting services

The Alberta Government Natural Gas Rebate Program provides a rebate to eligible Alberta homes and businesses if natural gas prices are above $6.50/GJ between October 2022 and March 2023.

Rebates will cover the difference between $6.50 and the regulated natural gas rate that calendar month. For example, if the highest regulated natural gas rate for the month is $7.50/GJ, eligible consumers would get a rebate on their bill covering $1 for every gigajoule used in that month.

If the monthly regulated natural gas rate is not higher than $6.50/GJ, no rebate is applied.

These rebates, if applicable, will be automatically credited to bills listed as “GOA Utility Commodity Rebate”—exact timing within the month varies depending on your billing cycle.

Who is eligible

Consumers will automatically receive the rebate on their utility bill if they are a natural gas consumer who:

• is connected to the system
• is on either a regulated or competitive plan
• uses less than 2,500 gigajoules of natural gas annually

​ Who is not eligible

Consumers are not eligible for an electricity rebate if they:

• disconnected from the system and are not currently enrolled with a natural gas retailer
  
• don't receive monthly natural gas bills directly from a utility provider such as in sub-metered residences where tenants pay a landlord or property owner for their energy usage (some condos and apartments)​

The provincial government has introduced a temporary measure to help RRO customers manage electricity rate volatility and record-high prices this winter.

Electricity consumers on the regulated rate option (RRO) will not pay more than 13.5 cents per kilowatt-hour for their usage between January 1 and March 31, 2023.

Any costs above this rate ceiling will be deferred and repaid by RRO customers between April 2023 and December 2024. Details on repayment will be shared as they become available from the provincial government.
