32 Avenue NW Transmission Line Alteration

Project Overview

In 2014, a fault occurred on a 69kV underground transmission cable feeding ENMAX Power Corporation’s (ENMAX) No. 34 Substation along 32 Avenue NW. ENMAX undertook an emergency replacement to restore the line to service by installing a portion of double circuit overhead transmission line. At the time of the emergency repair, ENMAX committed to stakeholders and the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) that it would apply to construct a permanent underground line (the Project) after power had been restored.

ENMAX intends to apply for approval to replace the overhead line with an underground solution; however, the AUC may determine that the existing overhead configuration remain permanently.

The Project, if approved, would include the removal of the existing overhead structures (nine wood poles and one monopole), the construction of an underground duct bank, and the installation of underground cable.

ENMAX will install one wood pole and two new monopoles at 39 Street NW to accommodate the overhead to underground transition of transmission lines 69-21.61L and 69-16.60L. Two additional temporary wood poles will be installed to maintain the continuity of electric supply during construction. These temporary wood poles will be removed prior to construction completion.

ENMAX will also make modifications within its No. 34 Substation yard to tie the underground transmission lines into the substation.
