If you have not entered into a contract with an electricity retailer, you are on the Regulated Rate Option (RRO).
ENMAX Power Corporation is responsible for providing the RRO in its Calgary service area. In other areas of the province, such as Cardston, Ponoka and Red Deer, the RRO rates are set by the applicable municipal government and the RRO service is provided by ENMAX Power Corporation.
ENMAX Power Corporation charges electricity retailers for the delivery of power and retailers pass these charges on to their customers.
ENMAX Power also collects a fee for electricity retailers called the Local Access Fee which is set by Calgary City Council. The Local Access Fee applies to all sites within the Calgary city limits.
ENMAX Power Corporation invests in facilities required to provide service to a new or expanded site as outlined in our investment policy as part of our Terms and Conditions. This policy describes our level of financial contribution and what financial contribution is required by the site owner/operator allowing builders to develop new sites without having to pay the entire cost to upgrade or build new electrical services.
The ENMAX Energy Default Supplier rate is for business customers who use over 250,000 kWh/year and have not signed an energy contract. These customers are automatically assigned the default supplier rate. The current rate structure, effective July 1, 2013, has a fixed demand charge per KVA plus a variable energy (MWh) charge based on AECO-C (gas price index) and a set heat rate.
As the supplier of electricity to homes and businesses in and around Calgary, ENMAX Power Corporation must charge electricity retailers for delivering power to their customers. Retailers pass these charges, also known as tariffs, on to their customers.
Customers are free to purchase natural gas services or electricity services from a retailer of their choice. For a list of retailers, visit ucahelps.alberta.ca or call 310-4822 (toll free in Alberta).
