Alberta Energy Market

What does a deregulated retail electricity market mean for your business?

Powerlines

Alberta has a deregulated retail energy marketplace where you, as a consumer, are able to choose your electricity and natural gas provider. A free market is good for many reasons, but it can be confusing. Understanding your business’s energy options can often seem complex.

The short answer:

  • A deregulated market gives you the freedom to choose your energy supplier
  • Each supplier will likely have a number of options for you to choose from
  • The best option for you will depend on your business drivers such as budget control, tolerance for risk and energy usage patterns

All customers are free to purchase natural gas services from the default supply provider or from a retailer of their choice and to purchase electricity services from the regulated rate provider or from a retailer of their choice. The delivery of natural gas and electricity to you is not affected by your choice. If you change who you purchase natural gas services or electricity services from, you will continue receiving natural gas and electricity from the distribution company in your service area. For a current list of retailers you may choose from, visit www.ucahelps.alberta.ca or call 310-4822 (toll free in Alberta).
