Distributed Generation

In August 2011, ENMAX Energy Corporation installed its first residential solar photovolataic (PV) system. Just two years later, in August 2013, our Home Solar1 program (formerly Generate Choice®) reached the one million kilowatt hours (kWh) of solar power produced from our systems.

We work to make alternative energy choices available to customers and remove the barriers to adoption. As of June 2013, ENMAX Energy had installed more than 600 kW of solar power capacity on homes across Alberta – that's about a quarter of all grid-connected solar in the province.2

Our inventory of commercial and residential solar
installations will reduce 19,000 tonnes of C0₂
emissions over their combined lifetime.

In the summer 2013 we installed 216 solar panels that cover 8,160 square feet of roof on our ENMAX Place office location as part of a microgeneration pilot program. Our 50kW solar photovoltaic array,  one of the largest grid-connected systems in Alberta, will help us learn more about larger scale systems and the design, permitting and installation work that goes into them.

The new system is expected to provide about 57,000 kWh of renewable energy to ENMAX Place each year. That's enough energy to operate approximately one third of the computers and monitors in the building.

Going forward, we look to increase renewable energy generation in Alberta and provide renewable energy solutions for both residential and commercial customers who qualify under Alberta's micro-generation regulation. We continue to work with the Climate Change and Emissions Management Corporation to increase accessibility of renewable energy, and we also provide support and sponsorship to the Alberta Energy Efficiency Alliance and Canadian Solar Industries Association to promote the growth of alternative energy solutions.
