'Snowtember', as it will forever be labeled, brought an unprecedented amount of snow (for that time of year) to Calgary. Although our infrastructure is strong, power lines were no match for heavy snow weighing down trees still laden with leaves. Across the city, branches, and whole trees, snapped and fell, taking power lines down with them.
Streets and backyards across Calgary became a tangle of branches and wire. In all, approximately 74,000 customers experienced power outages and our Customer Care Centre received more calls than during the 2013 flood. At the peak of the storm, we received approximately 2,000 calls per hour related to outages, more than 10 times what we normally receive in an entire day. We added new phone lines in order to be responsive to the unprecedented volume. Out in the field, we received assistance from Fortis, EPCOR, K-Line and Valard to help restore power to our customers.
The unique nature of the storm meant each customer had their own challenging circumstances – from wires dangling across their driveway, to a week's worth of food spoiling in the fridge, to trying to keep newborn twins warm and comfortable in a house with no power. We heard concerns via social media and through our Customer Care Centre and appreciate the difficulties our customers were up against.
We know that being without power for any length of time isn't easy, and the patience Calgarians showed in a challenging situation allowed us to focus on what was important – getting the power back on.
If you didn't hear our thank you radio spot the week after the storm, please take a listen now.
