ENMAX Power Corporation completes critical project for South Health Campus

In February 2013, ENMAX Power Corporation took to the skies to complete crucial work towards the completion of Substation 54 – an essential power supply that provides back-up for the new South Health Campus and meets growing demand for electricity in Auburn Bay, Cranston and other southeastern Calgary communities.

In this high flying operation, we used a helicopter to string transmission lines across Deerfoot Trail, minimizing the disruption to traffic.  It was like threading a needle 100 feet up in the air.

Crews had less than a year to build the substation – including kilometres of transmission lines and underground distribution feeders – all while working with several stakeholders and specific outage schedules.

To facilitate the construction of the distribution feeders, ENMAX Power employees cored underneath the Bow River using a horizontal directional drilling technique that caused minimal disturbance to the aquatic environment. We worked closely with Alberta Environment and Federal Fisheries and Oceans Canada to clear land on the river banks and complete the job with minimal disruption to the natural habitat.

Despite the many unique challenges in building Substation 54, our ENMAX Power project team completed it one week ahead of deadline, in time for the opening of the emergency ward at the South Health Campus.
