ENMAX ‘guardian angel’ a reminder of winter safety

In early December, an ENMAX Power Corporation meter reader walking his northwest route came across a senior in a secluded backyard who'd tripped on lawn furniture and was stuck in a snow drift. Wearing only a light winter jacket over her clothing to take out the garbage, the woman found herself alone and unable to move in -19 degree weather.

Our meter reader turned the corner, discovered the woman and helped her out of the snow and into her home. Fortunately, she'd only been outside for about 10 minutes and suffered only bruises.

The meter reader stayed with the senior for some time to ensure she didn't need an ambulance before carrying on with his route. At the end of his day, he went back to check on her again, and also took out her garbage and recycling.

"I am eternally grateful to him for saving my life," said the senior, who called ENMAX later that day. "I can't thank him enough."

This situation is a reminder to check for hazards buried under the snow that can cause injuries, including to utility workers like our meter readers. Here's what you can do to help keep your property hazard-free:

  • Clear snow and ice from sidewalks to the bare concrete and add sand or salt to slippery areas
  • Ensure gates open and close easily
  • Clear sidewalks and your yard of cords, sports equipment and tools
  • Neatly stack materials such as firewood
  • Keep dogs inside or in an outside dog run if you're not home
  • Whether your meters are located inside or outside, ensure a clear line-of-sight to your electricity and water meter by removing clotheslines, vegetation and other obstructions.

All customers are free to purchase natural gas services from the default supply provider or from a retailer of their choice and to purchase electricity services from the regulated rate provider or from a retailer of their choice.
