Update on Mayfair Place incident and response to business owners concerns:
- CB Richard Ellis (CBRE), property manager for commercial businesses at Mayfair Place, has advised that the Radiology clinic and Red Carpet restaurant are now open. Preliminary indications from CBRE indicate a possibility that commercial tenants can enter their locations by tomorrow and open for business by Monday. Commercial businesses should contact CBRE at 403.750.0538 to confirm re-entry date and time.
- Following the incident, our immediate priority was to work closely with the building owners and various local agencies to ensure individuals and families were safe, had alternate hotel accommodations, meals and transportation.
- The building owners and electrical contractors have been working as fast as possible to replace any damaged electrical equipment and restore power to the residential units and businesses.
- The goal has been to allow a speedy and safe return for the tenants and allow the commercial units to resume business as soon as possible. We will be in a better position to provide an update on timing for re-occupancy early next week.
- After hearing from some business owners recently, ENMAX was surprised to learn and does not accept that their insurance providers have no responsibility to assist their clients and to properly consider the claims of these commercial tenants. However, appreciating the urgency involved and the delay that sometimes arises in dealing with insurance claims, ENMAX is prepared to do what it can to assist businesses impacted in accordance with certain terms that we will be asking these commercial tenants to agree to so we can provide our help to restore their operations immediately. We clearly understand and sympathize with those cases where a business is placed in a position where it now has financial obstacles or other issues in its way to immediately resuming their business and provide care for their clients, patients and employees.
- ENMAX is committed to assist any of the commercial tenants that demonstrate they will sustain delays in resuming operations due to financial considerations or issues with their own insurers that prevent them from immediately replacing damaged equipment that is necessary to restore their operations. This assistance to commercial tenants will be provided based on a case by case assessment and will be limited to what is needed now for them to restore their operations. Those commercial tenants who are assessed to be able to fund their own resumption of operations will be advised that they should contact their own insurer’s first to pursue recovery of their costs through the normal claims process. The objective of ENMAX is that those who have legitimate claims will be dealt with fairly and quickly so they can get back to running their businesses.
- It is important to remember that the cause of the electricity surge is still under investigation and the normal process of dealing with the various claims that will arise from this matter will occur once the full extent of the cause is determined.
