Introduction to Our Team

ENMAX's executive brings the company experience in private business, municipal government and electric utilities. The team is charged with leading ENMAX into the evolving energy market.



Gary Holden, P.Eng., B.Sc.

President and Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Holden became President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ENMAX Corporation (ENMAX) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of each of ENMAX’s subsidiary corporations in May 2005. Mr. Holden serves as a director on each of the ENMAX Boards, the Canadian Electricity Association, the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation and NaiKun Wind Energy Group Inc.

Prior to joining ENMAX, Mr. Holden held several key positions with other organizations. Most recently Mr. Holden was President and Chief Operating Officer, AltaGas Income Trust. Prior to his role at AltaGas he was Chairman and CEO of EnSource Energy Services. Mr. Holden started his career in Calgary where he held a variety of positions with TransAlta Corporation. He was Executive Vice-President, Generation, and CEO of TransAlta New Zealand Limited, where he was responsible for the Australia and New Zealand business activities for TransAlta.

In 1983, Mr. Holden received a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Calgary and in 1997 was selected as one of Canada’s Top 40 under 40.



Allan Buchignani, P.Eng., B.Sc.

Executive Vice-President, Fuel Supply

Mr. Allan Buchignani is responsible for the fuel supply business. This business line finds and supplies gas for ENMAX’s retail customers and ENMAX’s generation assets. 

Prior to joining ENMAX in 2001, Mr. Buchignani held key positions at The City of Medicine Hat, first as Gas Utility Manager and later as Utilities Services Commissioner. Prior to this, Mr. Buchignani held executive, managerial and engineering positions in the oil and gas sector in British Columbia.

Mr. Buchignani obtained an Honours Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Washington State University, as well as completing numerous training seminars relating to Oil and Gas Acquisition, Performance, and Management. He has been a professional engineer for more than 30 years.



Rick Ehlers

Executive Vice President, Transmission & Distribution Services,
ENMAX Corporation

Mr. Ehlers is responsible for the regulated transmission and distribution (wires) businesses, regulated market services including metering, meter data management, load settlement, tariffs and billing.  He is also responsible for the non-regulated power services engineering, construction, procurement and maintenance business.

Mr Ehlers joined ENMAX in February 2001 and was appointed to his current position in July 2008. Prior to his current position, Mr. Ehlers was the Vice President of Human Resources responsible for human resources, occupational health and safety and ENMAX facilities.
 
Prior to joining ENMAX, Mr. Ehlers held several key positions with other organizations primarily in the employee/labour relations and electrical technician fields.
 
Mr. Ehlers has over 30 years experience in the utility industry and holds a Canadian Human Resources Professional designation and Power Electrician Certification. 



Darwin Gillies, P. Eng., B.Sc

Executive Vice-President, Energy Products and Technologies, ENMAX Energy

As Executive Vice President, Energy Products and Technologies, Mr. Gillies is responsible for the development of new energy technologies and products and for bringing these to the marketplace.  Mr. Gillies is accountable for EasyMax homeservicesTM, ENMAX Envision, as well as the AMI smart metering initiative. In addition Mr, Gillies continues to lead the Commercial & Industrial marketing team, as well as Valeo Power.

Mr. Gillies joined ENMAX in January 2006 as Executive Vice President, Retail Energy, responsible for expanding ENMAX Energy’s leadership position in the Alberta retail electricity and natural gas markets. 

Mr. Gillies brings more than 25 years of electricity industry experience to his role at ENMAX.  From 2000 to 2006, he was a founding partner and President of Valeo Power Corporation, a leading electricity retailer for industrial customers in Alberta. 

Mr. Gillies holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Manitoba.



Robert Hemstock, LL.B., B.Comm.

Executive Vice-President, Regulatory and Legal Services

Mr. Hemstock is responsible for regulatory, legal, environmental and government relations matters for ENMAX Corporation and its subsidiaries.  From 2002 to 2004, Mr. Hemstock was Vice-President Government & Regulatory Affairs for Direct Energy Marketing in Western Canada and in 2005 he assumed responsibility for Direct Energy’s Government & Regulatory Affairs activities across Canada.

From 1996 to 2002 he was responsible for government and regulatory affairs matters at UBS Warburg Energy Canada and Enron Canada.  Mr. Hemstock has a Bachelor of Commerce in marketing and industrial relations from the University of Alberta.  He received a LL.B. in corporate law from the University of Calgary in 1989 and has been a member of the Law Society of Alberta since 1990.



Dave Rehn, M.Sc., B.Sc

Executive Vice President, Generation, ENMAX Corporation

Mr. Dave Rehn is responsible for the negotiation, construction and operation of ENMAX's fleet of generation facilities.

Prior to joining ENMAX in December 2007, Mr. Rehn held several key positions including Senior Vice President and Chief Procurement Officer of Constellation Energy and President and Chief Executive Officer of Rovsing Dynamics. His experience also includes 25 years with Duke Energy Corporation, where he held a variety of positions including President and Chief Executive Officer of Duke Energy Power Services North America.

Mr. Rehn holds a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Engineering Mechanics from North Carolina State University and is a Registered Professional Engineer.

He also served as a board director for the United American Energy Corporation, Duke/UAE LLC, American Ref-Fuel Company and the United Way of Rock Hill, South Carolina and Richland, Washington. 



Keith Wellon, M.Eng., P.Eng.

Executive Vice President, Customer Care, ENMAX Corporation

Mr. Wellon joined ENMAX in October 2007 and was appointed Executive Vice President, Customer Care in July 2008.  He is responsible for ENMAX’s billing, call centre and customer care activities.

Prior to this role, Mr. Wellon was Executive Vice President, Infrastructure, Transmission and Distribution for ENMAX Power.

Mr. Wellon brings 20 years of experience in the energy field working with Newfoundland Power, Imperial Oil and most recently, Superior Propane.

Mr. Wellon holds a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from Memorial University of Newfoundland and is a registered member of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists, and Geophysicists of Alberta.

He has been a board member of many not-for-profit organizations in the past and is currently on the board of Agape Hospice Calgary, Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra (past chair) and the Calgary Affinity Newfoundland and Labrador Fundraising Dinner (chair).



Lonnie Enns, B.Sc., MBA

Vice President, Commodities, ENMAX Corporation

Lonnie Enns is responsible for the Corporations' electricity and natural gas trading, asset management, portfolio management and marketing.

Before joining ENMAX in October 2005, Mr. Enns worked for sixteen years at TransAlta Corporation where his experience included the development and implementation of TransAlta's trading and marketing strategy. He was responsible for asset optimization, trading and marketing activities associated with the merchant power output of TransAlta facilities in North America. He also oversaw the merchant fuel requirements and the management and development of traders and marketers working in TransAlta's trading offices located in Calgary, Portland and Annapolis.

Mr. Enns holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Computer Science from the University of Calgary. He also holds a Masters of Business Administration from Queens University. He is past President of the Energy Risk Management Association of Canada (ERMAC) and presently serves on the executive committee of the Western System Power Pool.



Erin Kurchina

Vice President, Human Resources

As Vice President of Human Resources, Erin Kurchina will be responsible for overseeing ENMAX’s Human Resources strategy including the Company’s employee relations, recruitment, compensation and training, and development strategies.  Ms. Kurchina also oversees ENMAX facilities and safety management activities.

Ms. Kurchina was promoted to Corporate Secretary five years after joining ENMAX as Manager, Corporate Secretariat in June 2000.

Before coming to ENMAX, Ms. Kurchina worked in the Human Resources department at Ontario Hydro and, before that, spent five years with Environment Canada.

She holds a Masters in Public Administration and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Toronto where she also pursued PhD studies in leadership.
