Did you know that electricity can travel through your body? Electricity always wants to touch the ground. If you touch a powerline, or hold an object that touches a powerline, you could be electrocuted.

Thinking About Safety
Think about how the following things could cause electrical accidents. If you think of a danger that we haven't mentioned, or have questions about electrical dangers, please e-mail us.

Toys
Kites
Fly your kite far away from powerlines.

Waterguns
Shoot your watergun far away from powerlines. If the water hits the powerline, electricity could travel down through the water.

Nature
Trees
Climb trees that are far away from powerlines.

Storms
If you see a storm approaching, stay away from trees and water. If you can, go inside a house or other type of shelter. If it's too late to get inside, drop to your knees and bend forward. Put your hands on your knees. Don't lie flat on the ground.

Equipment
Electrical Equipment
When you see a sign warning you of electrical dangers, please obey it. Electrical equipment such as towers and metal-looking cabinets contain extremely high amounts of electricity. Under certain conditions, you could get an electrical shock by touching this equipment.

Fallen Powerlines
Never touch a powerline that has fallen from its pole. If you see a fallen powerline, please tell an adult immediately and ask them to phone for emergency help. You could save somebody's life!

Poles
If something gets stuck in a powerline, never use a long pole to try to knock it out.
