Call before you dig
Before building on your property, it's important to locate electrical or other buried lines. This may help prevent accidents that can result in injury, delay or financial hardship. To locate buried utilities, phone Alberta 1 Call at 1-800-242-3447. A locator will come to your property and mark the location of underground utility lines. There's no charge for this service. Two working days notice is required.

Utility Right-of-ways
If you own property, you may have a utility right-of-way (also known as an easement) on your land. A utility right-of-way (URW) is land set aside to allow electricity, gas, water, sewer, telephone and cable television companies to provide service. To protect equipment such as underground powerlines, transformers, poles or overhead lines, no obstructions (sheds, foliage, fences, etc.) are permitted on this land. This restriction helps prevent hazards that could cause serious injuries. If you have a URW on your property, it will be listed on the Certificate of Title for your property.

Common questions:

What are the large electrical boxes found in yards or alleys?
These boxes are pad-mount transformers that lower the voltage of electricity from distribution levels to the 120/240-volt level used in homes. They're located on the right-of-ways in underground service areas. Follow safety signs and keep children away from transformers. If you have one on your property and want more information, please phone 1-877-571-7111 or e-mail us.

Can I build a garage over or under my electrical service line?
Yes, you may build over or under your service line, but first check that the line is installed in a duct or conduit. This makes it easier to replace or repair the line. You can't build over or under the main distribution line. If you build your garage under the overhead service line, phone (403) 514-3617 for information on clearances.

Tree/Shrub Trimming
Trees and shrubs beautify property, provide privacy, conserve energy and improve air, water and soil quality. Unfortunately, thousands of customers have power interruptions every year from trees that grow too close to high voltage, overhead powerlines. It's inconvenient and may be dangerous.

Property owners are responsible for trees that interfere with their own service line, which runs from the pole line to the house. If your trees contact your service line, we recommend you call a trained arbourist to trim your trees. To avoid problems from growth, plant new trees away from lines. We'll disconnect and reconnect the power at no charge so you may trim the trees safely.

The Power Lines and Nearby Trees program (PLANT program) is designed to trim trees growing into high voltage lines. We'll trim trees for public safety and to avoid power interruptions. Tree trimming is done in accordance with the Alberta Electrical & Communication Utility Code, which states utility operators must trim trees to certain Code standards.

If you'd like more information on the PLANT program, phone us at 514-3459.
