Before starting any work involving a change in existing electrical wiring, you must obtain a Homeowner Electrical Permit from The City of Calgary. The City also conducts all electrical inspections. If you have questions, contact The City of Calgary's Planning and Building Department by visiting them on the fourth floor of the Municipal Building or by phoning (403) 268-5363.

Ladders
Don't carry a ladder, or other long object near overhead powerlines. Remember, electricity can "jump."
If you aren't sure how far away your ladder should be (it can vary depending on the circumstances), Please phone us at 310-2010 (toll-free in Alberta) or e-mail us.
Tools
Don't use tools designed for indoor use when working outdoors. Outdoor tools have heavier wiring, more insulation and three prongs. Tools should always be plugged into a GFCI (see Outlets section).
Other
Hitting a Power Pole
If you hit a power pole, stay inside your vehicle until help arrives. If another danger forces you to leave your vehicle, don't contact any powerlines as you jump clear of the area (make sure your jump is controlled and you do not fall backwards into the powerlines). Don't touch your vehicle and the ground at the same time. Land with your feet together and shuffle away using small steps.
