Managing During Interruptions

In the event of a power interruption:

  • Call 911 for emergency or life threatening situations.
  • Turn off or disconnect any appliances or electronic equipment you were using.
  • Keep one light on so you know when the power comes back on.
  • Think safety! Don't bring gas or charcoal BBQs indoors. Be careful with candles.
  • Put on a hat or sweater to preserve your body heat if it starts to get cool (the temperature inside your home shouldn't become uncomfortable for at least four hours).
  • Listen to a battery-powered radio for information.
  • Keep your freezer door closed and food will stay frozen for many hours (12 to 48 hours, depending on how full the freezer is and what kinds of food are stored). Most food will keep in the refrigerator for 24 hours. (Dairy products should be discarded after six hours.)

    When the power comes back:

  • Reset electrical equipment and alarms.
  • Remember to restock your emergency supplies.

Read our tips on preparing for power interruptions so you're ready when the power goes out.
