Proposed Upgrade to Transmission System

ENMAX Power owns, operates and maintains the electricity distribution and transmission infrastructure in Calgary and some surrounding areas. The company has delivered safe, reliable electrical power to Calgarians for over 100 years. As the City of Calgary continues to grow, so does the need for electricity.

Phase I
In order to meet the growing needs of the City of Calgary, the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) proposed reinforcement to the existing transmission system running through south Calgary (including two substations), between Sarcee Trail, in the southwest, and Macleod Trail in the southeast. The existing transmission line will be decomissioned but will remain for future distribution level usage, and the two substations will have some equipment replaced.

ENMAX Power and the AESO have been working with stakeholders, including area residents and landowners since spring 2008. Open houses were held in May 2008. In August 2008, an application was filed with the Alberta Utilities Commission.

Phase II
To meet the growing needs of the City of Calgary, the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) identified the need to reinforce part of the existing transmission system stretching from Macleod Trail and 50th Avenue SE through the Fairview Industrial Area to Glenmore Trail and Blackfoot Trail SE from the existing 69kV to 138kV. ENMAX and the AESO (Alberta Electric System Operator) are committed to working with stakeholders and community members to share information, gather input, and address questions you may have.
Proposed Project
The proposed work would involve converting some existing lines and existing substations to a higher voltage.

Why is this work needed?
The AESO has identified the need for reinforcement of a section of the transmission system running through south Calgary, between Sarcee Trail, in the southwest, and Ogden Road, in the southeast. This map shows the location of this potential reinforcement. This section of the transmission system currently has a transmission capacity of 69 kV and needs to be improved: aging equipment, increasing demand for power in the areas served by this section of the transmission system in the Calgary area, and a need for restoring operational flexibility, are the main drivers for this need.

Commitment to Community
ENMAX is committed to being a responsible corporate neighbour in the community. This commitment includes providing timely and meaningful consultation with stakeholders about this proposed project.

A comprehensive public consultation program was developed to provide opportunities for area residents and landowners to be informed about this proposal and to engage with ENMAX Power in dialogue from the planning phase through construction, through a series of activities including information packages, community open houses and personal meetings.
