The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) has identified the need for upgrades and additions to the electric transmission system in east Calgary. The transmission reinforcements will meet a steady increase in demand for additional power and improve reliability in the area. This project will also connect the Calgary area to locally generated power from the proposed Shepard Energy Centre.
To keep you updated on the project status, in April 2011 we sent out a second newsletter with the most recent details.
This project involves:
Efforts from both ENMAX Power and AltaLink. We are working together as the proposed project includes work in the operating areas of both companies.
ENMAX Power
ENMAX Power’s work is comprised of:
- Work at existing ENMAX No. 2 substation, located at 3120 – 9 Street SE.
- A new switching station to be built by ENMAX Power to connect the proposed Shepard Energy Centre (owned by ENMAX Energy) to the Calgary area grid.
- Relocating an existing 138 kV (138,000 volt) transmission line onto new poles, between ENMAX No. 23 substation (2412 – 50 Avenue SE) and AltaLink Janet substation (Garden Road and 50 Avenue SE).
- A voltage increase on an existing ENMAX transmission line between No. 2 and No. 23 Substations
AltaLink
AltaLink’s work is comprised of:
- Work at existing substations and transmission line connections in the immediate area surrounding the substations:
- AltaLink Janet substation located at Garden Road and 50 Avenue SE
- AltaLink East Calgary substation located at 3115 – 9 Street SE
- A voltage increase on an existing AltaLink transmission line between the Janet and East Calgary substations.
- New transmission line infrastructure to connect existing adjacent transmission lines to the proposed Shepard switching station.
Commitment to Community
ENMAX Power and AltaLink will work in a respectful, collaborative and responsive manner to share information about the proposed changes to east Calgary’s transmission system, and listen to, understand and address stakeholder concerns where possible.
A comprehensive public consultation program has been developed to provide opportunities for interested parties to become engaged in dialogue and information sharing about this project from planning through operations.
