Credit and True Up Process

Can I receive a credit for any excess electricity generated at my home that is delivered to the electricity grid?

The production of electricity from alternative energy technologies may result in some of the generation being sent back to the grid. For example, while a family is at school or at work and there is little energy required in their home, the alternative energy technologies installed in their home might generate more electricity than the household needs at that time. During the periods when the on-site consumption is less than the generation from the alternative energy technology, the excess electricity generated is sent back to the grid. As of January 1, 2009, homeowners can receive a credit on their bill for any excess electricity generated at their home that is delivered to the electricity grid.

A detailed example would help illustrate this electricity credit process:

The above graph represents a household with micro-wind technology installed. Assuming the micro-wind technology generates 200 kWh that month, but 50 kWh of that electricity was generated at a time of day when it was not consumed by the household, that 50 kWh of excess electricity will be exported to the grid for someone else’s consumption. Assuming a total household consumption of 400 kWh/month, the blue bar represents the electricity consumed from the grid (250 kWh), and the green bar represents the electricity consumed from the micro-wind technology (150 kWh). Due to the micro-wind technology, the total billed amount from the grid will be 250 kWh instead of 400 kWh.

Assuming a total household consumption of 400 kWh per month, the blue bar represents the electricity consumed from the grid (200 kWh), the green bar represents the electricity consumed from the micro-wind technology (150 kWh), and the pink bar represents the 50 kWh credit applied from the previous month. Now, the billed amount from the grid will be for 200 kWh.

Under the Micro-Generation Regulation, credits cannot be carried forward for more than twelve months. Once per calendar year, the electricity retailer is required to pay the homeowner for any unused credits.
