Our Philosophy

ENMAX Conservatory

The ENMAX Conservatory is designed to demonstrate the use of five alternative energy technologies which supplement electricity to the building and hot water for internal use.

These sustainable energy sources are showcased through interactive exhibits in the main lobby of the conservatory, enabling conservatory visitors to learn about the benefits of alternative energy by drawing parallels to the natural world. By understanding how plants and animals function, visitors can learn much about alternative energy technologies such as solar thermal and solar photo voltaic (PV) panels, wind power and cogeneration systems.

The conservatory is registered with LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Canada and is built to achieve LEED® Gold certification. If validated, the conservatory will be the first in North America to achieve this level of certification and exemplify sustainable operation, design and construction.

The new ENMAX Conservatory features:

  1. a spectacular entry atrium with interpretive kiosks to provide information about alternative sources of energy
  2. the Garden of Life, a garden specializing in the relationship between plants and people
  3. the Garden Gallery, a more formal garden which will showcase seasonal flower displays and be home to butterflies from early spring through fall each year
  4. a specialized horticultural classroom and propagation lab
  5. elegant banquet space overlooking the gardens

It is the objective of the Calgary Zoo and ENMAX, that the ENMAX Conservatory becomes a living classroom where visitors can learn through interactive displays and gain insight into ways to conserve energy and reduce their environmental footprint. For this leadership, ENMAX was announced as the 2010 Emerald Award recipient in the business category.
