Osprey Camera

Introduction

Live Video of Osprey!

Thank you for joining us for another season looking into the lives of the osprey at the Calgary Zoo.

For over 17 years, a pair of nesting osprey have chosen to build their summer home on a platform constructed by the Calgary Zoo on a pole erected by ENMAX Power Corporation at the extreme east end of St. George's Island. For a third year, ENMAX Corporation is pleased to provide nature enthusiasts with the unique opportunity to intimately view the osprey's seasonal activities via live streaming video.

Why Watch the Osprey Camera?

These are dramatic birds of prey with a full summer nesting period in Western Canada.  The cycle of nest building, egg laying and incubation, hatching and fledging is a period of intense activity and of great interest which is centered at the nest and observable with a nest camera.

"This project introduces everyone who has access to a computer and the web into the private lives of a very dramatic bird," says Brian Keating, Calgary Conservationist.

"In recent years, we have watched the female 'fist' open an egg to assist the chick's emergence from the shell; we've witnessed a hail storm that covered the nest and the female osprey with white pellets and killed one of the three chicks; and we've observed so many other memorable moments including the chicks practicing for their first flight, and tender feeding times after fish of various species were delivered to the nest."

The opportunity to peer into the lives of a remarkable bird of prey is not to be missed!  Check back often to watch the progress of the osprey throughout the summer.
