- Install a programmable thermostat that will automatically turn the heat up before you get up in the morning, turn it down when everyone’s out for the day, and raise the temperature again when the family’s back at home.
- Ensure there are no gaps in weather-stripping around doors, fireplace dampers, attic hatches and air conditioners.
- Close off registers and doors to unused rooms and also keep your closet doors closed.
- Keep your furnace clean and in good repair. It’s a good idea to change your filter monthly during the heating season.
- Wrap an insulation blanket around your hot water tank to reduce heat loss from the tank.
- Have your heating system inspected by a licensed HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) professional at least once a year.
- Keep blinds and drapes closed at night to reduce the amount of cold air passing through your home.
- Curl up in a blanket instead of turning up the heat.
