1. How will I know what the Default Retailer Rate will be?
On April 1 2010, ENMAX Energy changed the default rate from a predominantly power pool pricing structure to a balance between fixed and variable costs, providing enhanced cost stability for the customer. The change is a better reflection of what it costs to serve default rate customers.

We currently link to the  “Canadian domestic gas price report” website and our customers can monitor current and historical AECO “C” Daily Index. We've also posted the Default Retailer Rate Schedule on our website to show how the Default Retailer Rate is calculated.

2. How does the Default  Retailer Rate work?
The Default Retailer Rate is a flow-through of the hourly Alberta Power Pool price (including pool uplift and trading charges determined by the Alberta Electric System Operator as well as charges for unaccounted for energy and distribution losses determined by the wires service provided in your service area).

The sum of these charges is multiplied by a customer's consumption for the corresponding period (this is known in the calculation as DFLT).

  • If the customer is metered, this calculation is performed on an hourly basis.
  • If the customer is not metered, the net system load weighted average will be used.
The net system load shape is determined by subtracting the interval meter load data from the total amount of energy consumed within that hour in the wires service area. The result of this calculation will be multiplied by a reasonable retail charge, plus the consumption multiplied by a charge for administration, including services for billing and customer service (this is known in the calculation as ADMIN).

Both DFLT and ADMIN charges will be shown separately on the customer's bill.
