Milestone agreement signed for Shepard Energy Centre
For Immediate Release
Calgary
10 Apr 2011

ENMAX Shepard Inc., a subsidiary of ENMAX Energy Corporation, is pleased to announce the awarding of a major contract for the completion of the Shepard Energy Centre, an 800 MW natural gas-fired generation facility that will be located in southeast Calgary. A joint venture between Kiewit Energy Canada Corp. and Black & Veatch Canada Company (KBV) will complete final design and construct the plant which will provide enough energy for roughly 50 per cent of The City of Calgary’s requirements while producing less than half of the CO2 per megawatt than a conventional coal plant.

“In 2008 ENMAX began rigorous planning and stakeholder engagement on the Shepard Energy Centre project,” said Charles Ruigrok, interim President and CEO, ENMAX Corporation. “Today’s announcement is an enormous step towards making this much needed generation facility a reality. In addition to the environmental benefits over coal-fired generation plants, Shepard will also be located close to where the electricity will be consumed, reducing the transmission infrastructure required to deliver power to our customers.”

Detailed engineering of the Shepard Energy Centre is already well underway. The project is comprised of two 240 MW natural gas fired turbine generators and one 320 MW steam turbine generator.

"On behalf of City Council, I am very pleased,” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “City Council has reviewed ENMAX's strategy on this project and reaffirmed our commitment to moving forward. Today's announcement is an important step in ensuring that Calgarians will have the safe, reliable, greener energy we will need in the future."

Preliminary construction including road access and site preparation will begin in late April with major construction expected to commence in July 2011. Commercial operation of the plant is scheduled for August 2015.
