ENMAX launches exciting new renewable energy school program
For Immediate Release
Calgary
10 Dec 2008

The ENMAX Corporation Gen E Program will provide teachers with tools to bring the concepts of energy conservation and emerging renewable energy technologies into the classroom. An online community will house classroom lessons and resources, useful web links, and a discussion forum for teachers to gain a level of knowledge and familiarity to bring the concepts to their classrooms. The ENMAX Gen E Program was developed in collaboration with teachers and administration from the Calgary Board of Education and Calgary Catholic School District and is one way that these organizations are showing their commitment to the environment and innovative ways of learning.

Sixteen schools and approximately 25 teachers from the two districts will be involved in the pilot program throughout the 2008-2009 school year and will have the opportunity to access the online resources, material kits, energy meters, and weather stations. For the Gen E pilot, ENMAX will install at least 6 alternative energy technologies (including solar domestic hot water systems, micro wind turbines and/or solar photovoltaic technologies) at select schools for students and the community to explore the environmental benefits, technical aspects, and generating capacity of these technologies. Schools currently scheduled to receive technologies include:

• Olympic Heights School (micro wind turbine)
• Alex Ferguson School (photovoltaic)
• Bowcroft School (photovoltaic)
• Willow Park School (photovoltaic)
• Forest Lawn High School (solar domestic hot water)
• Dr. E. P. Scarlett High School

Feedback from the teachers involved in the pilot program will be used to evaluate and enhance the Gen E program prior to its launch across the province which is anticipated for fall 2009.

A news conference was held today at Olympic Heights School at 2:00 p.m. to announce details of the Gen E pilot program.
