ENMAX Power Responds to Calgary Electrical Storm
A large electrical storm with severe lightning moved through Calgary and area last evening, causing ENMAX Power crews to respond to numerous brief but widespread outages to many areas of the city.
“Problems began around 7:00 p.m. and by 9:00 p.m. the large majority of customers had already had their power restored.” said ENMAX Vice President, Public Affairs Peter Hunt. “Many of the outages experienced were what we call trips and re-closes, caused by lightning, which would have resulted in brief outages with power rapidly restored, so many households experienced little more than flashing clocks. I’m pleased to report that the ENMAX system functioned precisely as it was designed to.”
ENMAX crews responded to outages throughout the city, with the communities of Bowness and Brentwood being those most severely affected. In all, approximately 65,000 Calgarians experienced power outages or interruptions as a result of the storm.
