MEDIA ADVISORY - Electrical Incident Evening June 15
For Immediate Release
Calgary, Alberta
16 June 2006

The purpose of this advisory is to provide information pertaining to the electrical incident the evening of June 15 that resulted in two bystanders being taken to hospital. At this time, we’d like to express our concern and best wishes for their well being.

We’d also like to take this opportunity to remind the public of the potential dangers of downed overhead power lines.

  • At approximately 7:00 p.m., we experienced a pole fire at 36th Avenue SE east of Macleod Trail.
  • The pole fire caused an 8 kV overhead power line to fall onto the ground.
  • The incident also caused an outage to the LRT system in the area.
  • We are currently investigating the incident. Our preliminary findings indicate the cause of the downed line was a result of a pole fire. Pole fires are often linked to wet weather and on very rare occasions can result in power lines falling to the ground.
  • It is our understanding two individuals were taken to hospital.
  • ENMAX crews received notification of the situation from emergency services and immediately worked to secure the area and restore power to the affected customers as quickly and safely as possible. The power was restored to the community at 8:25 p.m. Power to the LRT system was restored at 12:50 a.m.

An incident like this one is extremely rare. However, events of this nature can happen and we would like to remind the public of the potential dangers of overhead power lines. If you ever see a downed power line – even if the line does not spark or hum -  stay far away from it, keep others away and call 911 immediately.
