Through the ENMAX Rinklighter Pond Hockey Program, about $24,000 will be presented to communities in Calgary, Edmonton and Red Deer this month, helping to offset electricity costs at 96 community rinks in Alberta.
ENMAX Energy Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of ENMAX Corporation, provides a rebate to communities that own and operate a lighted outdoor ice rink throughout the winter season.
"Through the ENMAX Rinklighter Pond Hockey Program we’re able to help keep the winter traditions of ice skating and hockey alive by helping community associations fund their ice rink operations,” said Sean Durfy, ENMAX Energy president and chief operating officer.
Since 1999, ENMAX Energy has rebated about $120,000 to the Federation of Calgary Communities for distribution among participating communities. In 2000/2001, the ENMAX Rinklighter Pond Hockey Program was expanded to communities in Red Deer and this year, $3461 will be distributed to the 12 participating community rinks in Red Deer.
Some Edmonton communities also will receive a rebate. In 2002, the Edmonton Federation of Community leagues endorsed ENMAX Energy as the supplier of choice for their communities. The ENMAX Rinklighter Pond Hockey Program will rebate $5,050 to the 15 Edmonton communities that chose ENMAX Energy.
The cheque for Calgary communities was presented during the puck drop at last night's Calgary Hitmen hockey game at the Saddledome. The Red Deer rebate cheque was at the March 9 Red Deer Rebels game at the ENMAX Centrium. The presentation to the Edmonton Federation will be made later this month.
