McBride Lake Wind Farm, one of Canada’s largest single site wind farms, is a perfect example of ENMAX’s multi-faceted role as owner, developer and marketer in renewable energy.
ENMAX Energy led the way in the development of wind power generation in Alberta as 50% owner of the McBride Lake Wind Farm located near Fort Macleod in southern Alberta. Vision Quest Windelectric Inc. and ENMAX Green Power Inc. are equal partners in ownership of the McBride wind farm.
Construction on the $100-million facility began in November 2002 and the wind farm has been generating electricity since 2003. The 76-megawatt electricity generating facility produces about 235,000 MWh per year from 114 Vesta wind turbines. This is enough energy to power more than 29,375 homes annually and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 235,000 tons annually.
ENMAX Energy purchases McBride Lake’s entire electrical output for distribution to its residential and commercial customers.
