The Shepard Energy Centre is an 800 megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired power generation facility which will provide enough electricity for over half of Calgary’s current power requirements.
The Shepard Energy Centre will use efficient combined-cycle technology in which natural gas is burned in state-of-the-art combustion turbines that produce both electricity and heat. The heat is then captured to produce even more electricity through a steam turbine. The facility will be using advanced combustion technology and will produce less than half the carbon dioxide (CO2) per MW than a conventional coal plant.
In November 2010, ENMAX received AUC approval to construct and operate the Shepard Energy Centre. ENMAX started construction in July 2011 and commercial operation is planned for 2015.
ENMAX Energy has developed a detailed video rendering of the Shepard Energy Facility so stakeholders can review the existing landscape of the proposed site and how it will change. The video, which was developed from the engineering plot plan, depicts the facility to-scale and from a variety of views. View video
