On November 1, 2010, ENMAX Energy Corporation (ENMAX) received AUC approval to construct and operate the Shepard Energy Centre.

In April 2011, ENMAX awarded Kiewit Energy and Black & Veatch Canada Company a major contract to complete final design and construct the Shepard Energy Centre. On April 30, 2011, ENMAX also received Alberta Environment approval. Detailed engineering is already underway and preliminary construction including road access and site preparation will begin in early May. Major construction is expected to commence in July 2011 with commercial operation of the plant scheduled for August 2015.
